With the arrival of a late spring this year, it seems that Nature was in a frenzy to catch up with its usual timeline.
Our Spring Peepers started their chorus right on time, on April 15, even though there was still snow on the ground in places. Other frogs have since chimed in, and with the calls of evening birds, there's a lovely cacophony after sunset!
We've had a bumper crop of spring ephemeral wildflowers this year, possibly due to the very heavy insulating snow cover that we had last winter. Below, young ferns poke their heads up, a Spring Beauty shows off its delicate flower, a white trillium is ready to bloom, and a trout lily nods its head.
By the way, you can click on any image to see a larger version!
Young ferns just coming up, gorgeous red stems, eh?
A Spring Beauty. Most have bloomed and gone already.
A trillium, almost ready to bloom.
Trout lilies are doing extremely well this year. They are carpeting the forest floor widely, and there are lots of scattered blooms.

I've been out trying to photograph some of the birds as they arrive to cheer us up..... including rose breasted grosbeaks, our resident Kingfisher, and my mystery sparrow.
Here is a male rose breasted grosbeak, in the midst of his song.
A male belted kingfisher is watching for a meal in the pond below. It was neat to watch him hop off his perch, swoop down on the pond below, and snatch a meal from the water.
A curious song sparrow.
